Prof. Jockey Nyakaana

Professor Jockey Nyakaana is the Director Makerere University Jinja Campus which was opened in 2009/2010. He holds a PHD in Environmental Management from University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. He did his undergraduate studies at Makerere University 1975-1978 where he qualified with a BA Arts and Diploma in Education. He got his Masters in Geography from the same University.

Between 1980-1987 he was a High school teacher of Economics and Geography in Kenya  from where he joined Moi University in Kenya as one of the pioneer lecturers in Geography Department. He moved back to Makerere University in 1995 and was appointed lecturer in Geography Department where he served as Head of Department  1999 -2007.

In 1996, Prof. Nyakaana was very instrumental in designing curriculum for the following programs at Makerere University;  Bachelor of Tourism; Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Management;  Bachelor of Urban Planning and Bachelor of Development studies. He helped Open University of Tanzania, Kigali Institute of Science and Technology  and Kabale Universities in their curriculum design. Professor Nyakaana has undertaken diverse courses on Tourism both domestically and Internationally and has attended many international and domestic workshops and conferences presented academic papers and published widely on Tourism.

He represented MUASA on Council 2006-2014 where he was a member of Appointments Board; Staff Development, Welfare and Retirements committee.

 His research interest are on Sustainable Tourism Development; Tourism Planning and Development.

He is a member of The Association of Hospitality Schools in Africa.
